BRANKOPOPOVICBLOG: WE MAKE CARPETS

We Make Carpets is the creative collaboration of visual artist Bob Waardenburg and designers Stijn van der Vleuten and Marcia Nolte. Their carpets are constructed by hand with ordinary every day materials in a very extraordinary way.
The carpets are temporary, made on the spot with no thought out plans or sketches beforehand. This temporarity of the carpets makes it poetic and sublime.
The artists choose a material and commence on a journey together where they lay down the chosen materials one after the other in intricate patterns. The three designers bonded over this “in the moment” approach to creating, and their style seems to fit quite well –each carpet is a handcrafted masterpiece.

Bottle Carpet was part of theTaragalte Festival 2012, M'hamid, Morocco. It was commisioned by, and made possible with the great help and cooperation of, Taragalte.

Army Carpet was made for the exhibition 'WE MAKE CARPETS' during the Dutch Design Week 2010.

Pasta Carpet was made at Marcia's Studio in Amsterdam

Candybar Carpet was commissioned by Slokdarm festival, Veghel, The Netherlands. And was exhibited in the old CHV factory just outside the city.

Umbrella Carpet 2 was build out of over 6000 paper mini umbrella's, normally used to decorate pieces of food and cocktails. It was 3 x 2 meters big.
Umbrella Carpet 2 was shown in one of the windows of the Bijenkorf, Amsterdams biggest luxury department store, as a result of a residency in their artist in residence space Room on the Roof
Due to a limited amount of building time in the windows itself WE MAKE CARPETS thought of a different approach to construct the work. Where we normally work on the spot building the patterns, we now used the residency to pre-make 96 tiles which form the definitive pattern.
